TOM "RHSK" MCLAUGHLIN IN ACTION! Great job Tommy! Colonie - Albany Times Union, July 15, 2014 Patrolman Thomas McLaughlin was on his way to work Tuesday morning when a tractor-trailer driver had a heart attack and crashed into a tree on 5 Hemlock St. McLaughlin was following the truck and immediately gave the driver medical care. "He was going very slowly," Sgt. David Leonardo said. He said McLaughlin "told us he wasn't doing anything wrong, and just drifted off the road." Officer Patrick Fennelly also helped care for the man. "They knew what they needed to do, and hopefully saved a life," the sergeant said. The Colonie police station, located in front of the street on which the crash occurred, sent a crew from Colonie Emergency Medical Services that arrived in seconds, police said. Paramedics performed CPR until an ambulance arrived. The man was breathing when taken to a hospital, Leonardo said."If you're going to have a heart attack, this was the safest place to do it," Leonardo said. "The officers were glad to help, and would have done it for anyone." It was unclear which hospital the man was taken to. His name was not immediately released. Chuck Digangi, director of property services for Campito Properties, came into work around 7 a.m. to find the crash scene near his job. "We were just extremely concerned about the health of the driver," he said. "There was a truck, and the tree that's usually vertical was horizontal," Digangi said. Damage to property was minimal and no employees were hurt, he said. The truck was removed at about 9 a.m. |

RKMC NY III ROAD CAPTAIN STEVIE "LEFTY" WRIGHT 2017 Elsmere Fire Department Firefighter of the Year! It was on a November night last year when Stephanie Bridge says she was inside her Rotterdam home when it caught fire. Rushing to get her pets out, the 43-year-old says she was overcome by suffocating smoke and darkness.
"From the carbon monoxide poisoning and the cyanide poisoning, I just don't remember a lot," said Bridge. With Bridge falling to the ground and not able to escape, South Schenectady firefighters arrived within minutes, including Captain Chad Demania and firefighter Matt Mickle, who ran into her burning home. "There was just very heavy smoke, and just a lot of heat," said Demania. "I found her on the floor on the way into the bathroom. I called out to Chad who was in the doorway. He and I just grabbed her and pulled her out," said Mickle. Bridge was rushed to Syracuse Upstate Hospital with third degree burns; after a lengthy and painful recovery, the mother of four is thankful to be alive. Her gratitude was shown towards South Schenectady firefighters Wednesday night, thanking them for their bravery and calling them heroes. "They're my angels on earth, and true heroes in my heart," said Bridge. "I don't think I ever got into it to be a hero. It was just, I always liked to help people," said Mickle. "A lot of circumstances fell into play, and everything went right that night," said Demania. Bridge is looking forward to welcoming her first grandchild into the world. Wednesday night, though, she bought dinner for the members of the all-volunteer department. |
